​DiamLength is an automated fibre diameter, length, and curl measurement instrument.  Measuring fibre diameter as small as 1 um and fibre length as long as 20 mm, it can measure up to 40,000 fibres in less than a minute.  It is ideal for measuring glass fibre, carbon fibre, basalt fibre, aramid fiber, PP fibre, polyimide fibre, PET fibre and more.  This powerful instrument saves time and money while preventing measurement errors and improving quality control.  The system reports and records its measurements for easy data logging and report writing. 

Technology

Diameter and length measurement are typically measured using optical microscopes, optical comparators and rulers, and inevitably involve errors due to individual differences among operators and measurement conditions. The process is usually slow and tedious and only a low number of fibres are measured.

The DiamLength uses digital camera technology and image processing.  Various dimensions are rapidly and accurately measured from the captured images.  The images are illuminated using a strobed high-powered led light source.  The fibres traverse across a set of imaging plates that also forms as the flute to suck up the fibres from the beaker.  The fibres cast a shadow on the camera surface, sophisticated edge detection and classification algorithms detect all the fibres in the image.  A custom sub-pixel algorithm is used to determine the edge of the fibre beyond the size of the pixel.

Quick and simple process
Once the fibres are dropped into the glass beaker with water, the instrument will do the rest: disperse, measure and dispense the fibres.
